Natural essential oil (Rose EO)

Outfit: Heart (with an extension towards the back)

Olfactory family: Floral

Olfactory facets: Rose, honeyed, fruity, slightly spicy, green, powdery

Mobile, clear liquid, generally pale yellow to slightly golden.

Rose essential oil is obtained from rose petals (primarily Damask rose or Centifolia rose). In perfumery, it is one of the most prized raw materials: its olfactory profile is intensely floral, rich, and nuanced, with honeyed, slightly fruity, and sometimes green or spicy facets. It immediately adds depth, sensuality, and sophistication to a composition, even in small doses.

A bit of history

A universal symbol of love and beauty, the rose has been used for centuries in perfumes, ointments, and skincare rituals. Rose essential oil, obtained through steam distillation, is a rare and precious substance: a large quantity of petals is needed to produce just a few grams. Over time, it has become an absolute benchmark for floral accords. Even though synthetic molecules can mimic certain facets of the rose, the essential oil retains its iconic status, sought after for its complexity and natural vibrancy.

Its role in a perfume

Rose essential oil often plays the role of the emotional heart of the formula:

  • It structures the floral accords and brings an immediately recognizable signature.

  • It adds depth to the composition, combining sweetness, freshness and honeyed warmth.

  • It can make a perfume more sophisticated, more “couture”, even in discreet doses.

  • It serves as a pivot between the top (citrus, spices) and the base (woods, ambers, musks), creating a smooth transition.

In many niche perfumes, the rose is deliberately emphasized, either as a soliflore, or as a backbone around which other materials are grafted (oud, incense, fruits, spices…).

Agreements and associations

Rose essential oil pairs particularly well with:

  • Citrus fruits (bergamot, lemon, grapefruit) for a bright and sparkling opening.

  • The spices (pink pepper, cardamom, saffron) that highlight its fruity or slightly liqueur-like facets.

  • Woods (sandalwood, cedar, oud) for denser, more sensual or mysterious accords.

  • The amber and vanilla notes accentuate its warm, honeyed, almost gourmand side.

  • Modern musks and ambers , which prolong its sillage and give it a soft and enveloping setting.

It also combines very well with other flowers (jasmine, iris, orange blossom) to create complex and textured bouquets.

Sensation on the skin

On the skin, Rose essential oil unfolds a deep floral sensation, both velvety and subtly fresh, like a petal still damp with dew warming from body heat. It leaves a trail that is both elegant and intimate, capable of making a fragrance instantly memorable. It is an expressive ingredient, yet one that can also blend harmoniously with the rest of the formula, depending on the desired style.

STORAGE & PRECAUTIONS

  • Do not swallow - material for cosmetic use only.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Avoid contact with eyes; do not apply undiluted to the skin. Follow the recommended dosages.
  • Certain compounds may cause allergic reactions in some sensitive individuals when the raw material is incorporated into a cosmetic formulation (according to the 7th Amendment to the European Directive on cosmetic products (2003/15/EC)): linalool, benzyl benzoate, eugenol, farnesol, geraniol, benzyl salicylate. As a general rule, always perform a patch test of your preparation on the inside of your elbow at least 48 hours before using it.

Additional information

The raw materials offered here are solutions diluted in DPG (dipropylene glycol) , specially designed for olfactory discovery. They are not intended for creating ready-made perfumes at home, but primarily for educational use: allowing users to smell, in isolation, the note hidden at the heart of certain compositions and to understand how it behaves on a blotter or on the skin.

By exploring these raw materials, you go behind the scenes of perfume formulation: how a woody, amber, floral, or musky note shapes an accord, how it evolves over time, and how it transforms the perception of a finished fragrance. This direct access to the perfumer's "toolbox" allows you to refine your sense of smell, put words to what you love, and approach your everyday perfumes with a more discerning eye.

The House of Perfume also occasionally organizes workshops dedicated to raw materials , led in collaboration with a perfumer. These sessions, both technical and informal, offer an opportunity to discuss materials, formulas, and the creative process, step by step. If you are interested in this type of workshop, please contact us using the contact form : we will inform you of upcoming sessions and how to participate.
