Natural essential oil (Lemon EO)

Outfit: Head

Olfactory family: Citrus / Fresh

Olfactory facets: Zesty, tangy, fresh, fruity, slightly sweet

Mobile, clear liquid, generally pale yellow to bright yellow.

Lemon essential oil is obtained by cold pressing the peel of the fruit. In perfumery, it embodies the most immediate freshness: its olfactory profile is lively, zesty, and tangy, with very bright, slightly fruity, and sometimes almost sweet citrus facets. It immediately provides a tonic, energizing effect that awakens the composition and gives an impression of cleanliness and dynamism.

A bit of history

Long used in colognes and aromatic preparations, lemon is a classic ingredient in fresh perfumery. Widely present in everyday products (personal care, household, home fragrance), it is sometimes perceived as "simple," but in fine perfumery, its quality and dosage make all the difference: a beautiful lemon essential oil, properly processed, brings a clear, vibrant radiance that is impossible to perfectly reproduce with synthetic copies alone.

Its role in a perfume

Lemon essential oil is primarily used as a top note:

  • It opens the fragrance with a frank and sparkling freshness, almost a “wake-up call”.

  • It provides a cleansing, clear effect, instantly creating a bright olfactory profile.

  • It enhances citrus accords and energizes floral or aromatic compositions.

  • Used with precision, it allows you to give rhythm to the head without weighing down the rest of the structure.

In many creations, it marks the very first contact with the perfume, even if it fades quite quickly to give way to the heart.

Agreements and associations

Lemon essential oil pairs particularly well with:

  • Other citrus fruits (bergamot, grapefruit, mandarin, orange) for bright, citrusy heads.

  • Aromatic notes (lavender, rosemary, basil, mint) in colognes, fougères and “fresh water” accords.

  • The aquatic or ozonic notes , to which he adds a more realistic and zesty dimension.

  • Light flowers (orange blossom, neroli, lily of the valley) for daytime, airy arrangements.

  • Teas, musks and light woods , for clean, easy-to-wear, very contemporary perfumes.

It is omnipresent in summer creations and in perfumes designed for the “great outdoors”, sports or everyday life.

Sensation on the skin

On the skin, Lemon essential oil gives the impression of freshly cut zest: a sharp, slightly tangy freshness that quickly softens to leave a gentler, fruitier, and cleaner sensation. Its evolution is rapid, but its impact on the initial olfactory impression is decisive. It's an aggressive ingredient that sets the tone from the very first seconds.

Additional information

The raw materials offered here are solutions diluted in DPG (dipropylene glycol) , specially designed for olfactory discovery. They are not intended for creating ready-made perfumes at home, but primarily for educational use: allowing users to smell, in isolation, the note hidden at the heart of certain compositions and to understand how it behaves on a blotter or on the skin.

By exploring these raw materials, you go behind the scenes of perfume formulation: how a woody, amber, floral, or musky note shapes an accord, how it evolves over time, and how it transforms the perception of a finished fragrance. This direct access to the perfumer's "toolbox" allows you to refine your sense of smell, put words to what you love, and approach your everyday perfumes with a more discerning eye.

The House of Perfume also occasionally organizes workshops dedicated to raw materials , led in collaboration with a perfumer. These sessions, both technical and informal, offer an opportunity to discuss materials, formulas, and the creative process, step by step. If you are interested in this type of workshop, please contact us using the contact form : we will inform you of upcoming sessions and how to participate.
