Jasmine essential oil (often used as jasmine absolute in perfumery) is one of the most emblematic flowers in a perfumer's palette. Its olfactory profile is rich, sunny, and sensual, with intense white floral facets, slightly fruity, honeyed, sometimes animalic notes, and a creamy, almost milky base. Just a few traces are enough to give a composition a carnal and luminous dimension.

A bit of history

Native to Asia and widespread around the Mediterranean basin, jasmine has been used for centuries in ointments, perfumed oils, and rituals. In fine perfumery, it quickly became a cornerstone of grand florals, classic bouquets, and haute couture creations. Its delicate production (hand-picked at dawn, rapid extraction) makes it a noble, rare, and expensive ingredient, particularly sought after in niche perfumery for the complexity of its sillage.

Its role in a perfume

Jasmine essential oil is primarily used as a heart note and plays a central role in many compositions:

  • It brings an intense white floral signature , both luminous and sensual.

  • It adds volume and depth to floral bouquets, making them more sophisticated.

  • It creates a bridge between the fresh top notes (citrus, hesperides) and the warmer base notes (woods, ambers, musks).

  • Depending on the dosage, it can be radiant and opulent, or more discreet, simply “enveloping”.

It is at the heart of many great classics, but also of modern florals that play on transparency while preserving its character.

Agreements and associations

Jasmine essential oil pairs particularly well with:

  • Citrus fruits (bergamot, lemon, mandarin) which highlight its bright and sunny facet.

  • Other white flowers (orange blossom, tuberose, ylang-ylang) for rich, sensual, highly textured bouquets.

  • The woods (sandalwood, cedar, vetiver) that bring structure and sophistication, balancing its softness.

  • The amber and musky notes , which prolong its sillage and reinforce its carnal dimension.

  • Fruits (peach, apricot, exotic fruits), for rounder florals, sometimes gourmand or sunny.

It can be treated as “pure jasmine” (single flower) or integrated into more complex architectures (floral-chypre, floral-amber, floral-woody…).

Sensation on the skin

On the skin, Jasmine essential oil unfolds an enveloping, luminous, and slightly creamy white floral sensation. The first few minutes reveal a radiant, almost sun-kissed flower, followed by warmer, honeyed nuances, sometimes with a touch of animalic or milky notes depending on the composition. It's a material that lends the fragrance a very human, almost tactile presence, and an immediate sensuality.

Additional information

The raw materials offered here are solutions diluted in DPG (dipropylene glycol) , specially designed for olfactory discovery. They are not intended for creating ready-made perfumes at home, but primarily for educational use: allowing users to smell, in isolation, the note hidden at the heart of certain compositions and to understand how it behaves on a blotter or on the skin.

By exploring these raw materials, you go behind the scenes of perfume formulation: how a woody, amber, floral, or musky note shapes an accord, how it evolves over time, and how it transforms the perception of a finished fragrance. This direct access to the perfumer's "toolbox" allows you to refine your sense of smell, put words to what you love, and approach your everyday perfumes with a more discerning eye.

The House of Perfume also occasionally organizes workshops dedicated to raw materials , led in collaboration with a perfumer. These sessions, both technical and informal, offer an opportunity to discuss materials, formulas, and the creative process, step by step. If you are interested in this type of workshop, please contact us using the contact form : we will inform you of upcoming sessions and how to participate.
