Synthetic molecule (abstract ambergris)

Outfit: Background

Olfactory family: Amber / Woody / Musky

Olfactory facets: Amber, driftwood, warm skin, slightly salty, dry, musky, very subtle blond tobacco

Crystalline solid or white to slightly yellowish waxy mass, requiring dilution in alcohol or a suitable solvent for use in composition (clear solution).

Ambroxan is a synthetic molecule derived from sclareol (found in clary sage), designed to recreate certain facets of natural ambergris. In perfumery, it is prized for its dry, slightly mineral, amber-woody profile, with hints of driftwood, warm skin, and a musky depth. It lends a composition an elegant, diffuse, and very persistent trail, often perceived as clean, sensual, and enveloping.

A bit of history

Because ambergris is rare, expensive, and highly regulated, modern chemistry has sought alternatives to recapture its allure. Ambroxan is one of the most emblematic answers to this quest: an abstract interpretation of ambergris that is stable, reproducible, and more accessible. Since the late 20th century, it has established itself as a cornerstone of modern amber accords, contemporary woody fragrances, and numerous bestsellers, particularly in niche perfumery, where its simultaneously minimalist yet highly present character is widely exploited.

Its role in a perfume

Ambroxan is primarily used as a background note and plays several key roles:

  • It builds a light amber-woody base , which gives body and staying power to the fragrance.

  • It provides a diffuse, clean and textured trail, without being overly sweet.

  • It enhances the perception of heated skin, with a very contemporary “skin fragrance” effect.

  • It can serve as the backbone for deliberately minimalist compositions, where a few key materials are enough to create a signature.

Depending on the dosage, it can remain in the background as a simple amber base or become the true signature of the fragrance.

Agreements and associations

Ambroxan pairs particularly well with:

  • The citrus and fresh notes (bergamot, lemon, grapefruit) are anchored and prolonged in a warm and dry base.

  • The woods (cedar, sandalwood, vetiver), with which it forms modern, clean and very persistent woody accords.

  • The transparent flowers (light jasmine, lily of the valley, “airy” flowers), which it supports without crushing, adding an amber depth.

  • Musks and certain marine or mineral notes, for compositions that evoke skin, salty air, driftwood.

  • Contemporary amber accords , less sweet than classic orientals, but just as enveloping.

It can be found in both highly structured perfumes and almost minimalist structures, centered on this amber-woody halo.

Sensation on the skin

On the skin, Ambroxan translates into a soft, dry warmth, reminiscent of sun-kissed skin, light wood polished by time, sometimes with a subtle hint of salt or very delicate blond tobacco. Its evolution is gradual yet remarkably persistent: it accompanies the fragrance for hours, sometimes until the next day, leaving an intimate trace that can be perceived both on the skin and on clothing. It's a base note that plays as much on the scent as on the sensation of texture and presence.

STORAGE & PRECAUTIONS

Store in the bottle provided or in a sealed container, protected from air and light, and at a temperature below 25°C.

  • Do not swallow - material for cosmetic use only.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Avoid contact with eyes; do not apply undiluted to the skin. Follow the recommended dosages.
  • Certain compounds may cause allergic reactions in some sensitive individuals when the raw material is incorporated into a cosmetic formulation (according to the 7th Amendment to the European Directive on cosmetic products (2003/15/EC)): linalool, benzyl benzoate, eugenol, farnesol, geraniol, benzyl salicylate. As a general rule, always perform a patch test of your preparation on the inside of your elbow at least 48 hours before using it.
  • Dangerous. Follow the safety precautions.
  • May cause a skin allergy.

Additional information

The raw materials offered here are solutions diluted in DPG (dipropylene glycol) , specially designed for olfactory discovery. They are not intended for creating ready-made perfumes at home, but primarily for educational use: allowing users to smell, in isolation, the note hidden at the heart of certain compositions and to understand how it behaves on a blotter or on the skin.

By exploring these raw materials, you go behind the scenes of perfume formulation: how a woody, amber, floral, or musky note shapes an accord, how it evolves over time, and how it transforms the perception of a finished fragrance. This direct access to the perfumer's "toolbox" allows you to refine your sense of smell, put words to what you love, and approach your everyday perfumes with a more discerning eye.

The House of Perfume also occasionally organizes workshops dedicated to raw materials , led in collaboration with a perfumer. These sessions, both technical and informal, offer an opportunity to discuss materials, formulas, and the creative process, step by step. If you are interested in this type of workshop, please contact us using the contact form : we will inform you of upcoming sessions and how to participate.
